‘Active Meditation’ is a collage made by layering an abstract mixed media painting on archival paper with charcoal figure drawings that came about from the many ‘croquis’ sessions in my studio.
The most realistic figure in the foreground is a study of one of my lovely students holding a 10-minute pose. She’s sitting in a meditation pose that actually sits over the passepartout, like she’s coming out of the frame into our world. That little detail changed the whole piece for me. The stick figures around her feel almost like they’ve come alive. They’re a bit playful, almost like they’re moving or dancing around her stillness.
It’s called Active Meditation because it’s usually in those moments of dance, that we’re tryly present and in the moment.
The piece comes ready to hang in a cherry wood frame.
