BIOGRAPHY
Mica Stojanovic is an international contemporary artist based in Malmö, Sweden. Her expressive mixed-media and oil paintings explore feminine strength, cultural identity, freedom and modern womanhood.
Born in Serbia and shaped by a life spent across Europe, the Caribbean and the Americas, Mica's work combines figurative painting with expressive colour, texture and symbolism. Her inspiration usually comes from wild nature, movement, and women across the globe.
Mica began her professional art career in 2016 in Panama and later deepened her practice through studies in oil painting and mixed media at Milan Art Institute.
Today she works from her studio in Malmö, Sweden, where she creates original paintings and murals, and commissioned artwork for private collectors and businesses.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Mica Stojanovic is a contemporary artist working primarily in figurative abstraction. Her paintings explore feminine identity, freedom, transformation, resilience and the relationship between the individual and the world around them.
At the heart of her practice is the idea of finding beauty in the wild, discovering beauty, meaning and possibility within circumstances that are not always chosen or controlled.
Her paintings begin in a place of uncertainty. The background is created intuitively through layers of expressive colour, movement, texture and spontaneous mark-making. From this seemingly chaotic environment, figures begin to emerge.
The background is uncontrolled. The figure is intentional.
This tension between chaos and control is central to Mica’s work. The wild environment can represent the circumstances life gives us: the things we inherit, encounter and cannot always change. At other times, it reflects the environments we create ourselves, the choices we make, the risks we take and the mess we sometimes find ourselves in.
Rather than attempting to impose order from the beginning, Mica allows the painting to reveal itself. Once the abstract layers have dried, she steps back and looks into the work, searching for the subject hidden within the wild that wants to come out. Most often, she discovers women, sometimes accompanied by animals, birds or fish.
The resulting figures are not simply placed against an abstract background. They emerge from it, becoming part of the same environment that initially appeared chaotic. In this way, the painting becomes a visual exploration of how beauty and meaning can be discovered within the complexity of life.
PROCESS
Mica works intuitively, building each painting through successive layers of acrylic paint, inks, charcoal, texture and other mixed media.
The early stage is what she calls ‘play time’, a period of experimentation where paint is splashed, dripped, layered and moved freely across the surface. There is no predetermined image and no attempt to control every mark. The process creates an unpredictable landscape of colour, movement and texture.
Once this layer has dried, Mica begins to look into the painting rather than simply at it. She searches for forms, figures and relationships within the marks, allowing the subject to emerge from what has already been created.
This act of discovery is an essential part of her practice. The painting begins without certainty about what it will become, but the accumulated marks, colours and textures provide clues. Mica follows those clues, refining the emerging figure while preserving traces of the wild environment from which it came.
ARTISTIC PHILOSOPHY
Finding beauty in the wild is both the guiding philosophy and the recurring thread throughout Mica’s artistic practice.
The “wild” represents the complexity of existence, the environments we are given, the circumstances we encounter and the environments we sometimes create ourselves. We do not always get to choose the landscape we find ourselves in. Sometimes we do.
What matters is what we are able to see within it.
Mica’s work explores the possibility of finding beauty within uncertainty, complexity and imperfection through instinct, perspective and the experiences accumulated throughout life. Rather than depicting a perfectly controlled world, her paintings embrace the unexpected and allow beauty to emerge from it.
The figures that appear within the paintings embody this idea. They are not separate from the wild around them; they belong to it. Their strength comes not from eliminating the chaos, but from existing within it.
MATERIALS & TECHNIQUE
Mica’s paintings combine mixed media with oil painting. She works with materials including acrylic paint, acrylic inks, charcoal, texture mediums and gold leaf, building complex surfaces through layers of colour, mark-making and texture.
Although the early stages are deliberately spontaneous, the final stages become increasingly intentional. Mica uses oil paint and glazes to refine the figures, deepen the colours and create contrast between the expressive mixed-media foundation and the more deliberate painted forms.
She deliberately allows elements of the original marks, splashes and movement to remain visible. These traces preserve the energy of the painting’s beginning while giving the finished work greater depth, complexity and a sense of movement.
The combination of mixed media and oil also contributes to the physical richness, durability, and archival longevity of the finished work.

These recurring figures and motifs form an evolving visual language around femininity, instinct, freedom, transformation and our relationship with the environments we inhabit.
