Original 'Chief Mary'
Mixed Media, 98×65×3cm
Chief Mary is a high-quality work of art built to last. The frame is handmade and covered with Caravaggio cotton canvas, a professional quality material made in Italy.
It is one of eleven paintings in the Motherfunk collection that was created just before my son turned two and is a tribute to the strength, perseverance and the beautiful and wonderful everyday chaos of motherhood. The collection explores the idea that mothers are everyday superheroes, filled with life experience and stories.
The word ‘mary’ means ‘woman’ in Ngäbe-Bugle, the indigenous dialect native to Carenero Island in Bocal del Toro, Panama, where I lived for four years, so the portait represents the chief woman, and most mothers as chiefs of the family.
The painting is varnished with a satin varnish that is not too glossy and provides long-lasting protection against dust and fading, ensuring many years of durability and visual enjoyment. It is available at House of Mica Art Studio in Malmö.
